I would expect it to be a lot shorter. Do we really need all those detailed "begattings" and war stories?
I would expect it to contain a few clear simple rules to live by and how we should treat each other in a loving co-operative society. Not pages and pages of minute rules ala the old law covenant. I would think those few simple rules would be carved in a big stone and placed where anyone walking by could see them for miles, and sure, a few angels with flaming swords to guard them from revisions wouldn't be a bad touch. The ten commandments was a good idea, but he should have made them bigger, carved them into the mountain or something like in Mount Rushmore, for all to see and then stopped there. Maybe the stones could yell out, when too many people are disobeying, like when parents yell at their kids from upstairs, "Knock it off! Don't make me come down there or somebody's gonna be sorry!"
I would also like a second stone, or even a book, that answered some of the questions people really want to know. Like where did God come from? What does he look like? What form does he take? What are his precise co-ordinates of his heavenly throne? How about some sketches of our solar system, the galaxy, the universe? How did you form the earth? How did you form us out of dust? Giving us the properties of the elements would have been a nice bonus. That could have come in handy five thousand years ago.
I would expect it to contain recipes for healthful eating and what plants are posionous and should be avoided. Maybe an admonition against smoking since it causes cancer. I would expect an explanation about why some kids are born horribly deformed and live in agony of pain, even though the wages sin pays is supposed to be death after 70-80 years? I would like to know why the animals die and are sometimes also deformed and suffer greatly if they didn't sin? I would like to know why they all rip each other apart for food and some of them can't even digest vegetables properly? I would like to know what the purpose of bacteria, and virus are and mosquitos and spiders and all the other venoumous insects?
I would expect God to give his children these words set in stone back in the garden of Eden or at least after Adam and Eve sinned and were thrown out, not written down thousands of years later in a language almost no one spoke.
I would expect God to judge and punish infractions of his rules himself not appoint imperfect humans to do it, whom he knew would SCREW it all up and do it unfairly because they cannot read hearts like he can.
I would expect God to be absolutely consistent and not contradict himself. I would expect his prophecies to be in clear, precise language and not be open to mis-interpretation. I would expect them to have expiry dates on them and always come true exactly on time.
Yep, I would expect God's word to answer all the questions I really want to know. You know, the ones little kids always ask but soon learn not to because grown-ups don't like it when they don't know the answers.

fhn, you do annoy the heck out of me many times, but i have to acknowledge that you've continued to be friendly and not take it personally.

Good for you John. It takes a big man to apologize and a bigger one to do it publicly.

Two of these boys are still children themselves. Children do what they are taught to do by older members of their society. There is no easy answers to what to do with an entire culture that sees women and children as animals to be used and killed as seen fit. Scapegoating two of the littlest members will do nothing to solve what is a problem throughout all of Africa and Asia.

I just finished demonstrating to you Spike, that it's not necessary to live by other's opinions. Sometimes it may be wise though if they have more experience than I do in a certain area. I may take the word of my surgeon, that I need my gallbladder removed. The pain in my side is giving added weight to his opinion. That does not make him my god. I defer to his greater expertise in that subject. He may later defer to my opinion and greater experience in doing his taxes. That does not make either of us gods to each other. It is a mutual exchange of services based on efficiency. It is advantageous to us both.

cog - yes there is a remarkable similarity between the JW/fundie God and santa Claus
Yes, ql, it is the childhood version of God. Then when the child is around 6-8 years old, it is expected to discard the childhood character as a fairy story, and accept the grownup version of God, which is now REAL! (because grownups believe in it and as we know, they get kind of irate when their beliefs are questioned).

We all have our "gods", those whose opinions we put above others. In other words, the opinions of those we live our lives by.
It's true many do, but not everyone, and it is not necessary. We have a choice to live by our own experience especially if we are adults.
I sleep 8 hours a day because my body shows me I need that, not because the doctor or my parents tell me to. I eat every 4 or 5 hours because my body tells me it is hungry not because someone else says it's lunchtime. I exercise because my body stiffens up and get's sore if I don't.
I work, and play "the game" of whatever industry I'm in by other people's rules, because that's how I make money to get the food and clothes and shelter I know I need to survive, not necessarily because I believe in all the rules and certainly not because I view my customers or bosses as godlike or their opinions superior in any way.
I engage in leisure activities, purely because I enjoy them, not because they are popular or fashionable.
I have sex, and have children and look after them because it is the strongest instinctual drive of our species.
I look after the elderly or disabled out of compassion for their suffering and in the hopes that my children or someone else's will do the same for me when I'm old and sick.
Life can really be that simple. We eat, we sleep, we work, we play and we procreate (for lack of a better word). Then we die. There is no greater meaning.
People who can't accept that reality for some reason, feel compelled to make up lots of fantastical stories and force them on their children and other people from other cultures whose stories they don't like as much. Since the stories are so unbelievable, they have to use fear, punishment and shame as inducements for other's to believe. If that doesn't work, they can always kill them, or wait for God to do it.
Yeah, that's the real definition of insanity. I'll take a good dose of reality, no matter how harsh, thanks very much.

I'll agree with the second statement Spike. If you removed your cultural bias, you would see it applies equally to the first statement. Every culture has it's own god story that they understand in their own minds as "spiritual".
Santa Claus bears remarkable similiarities to God. He is omniscient. He sees everything everyone does all over the world at the same time. He judges us on whether we are bad or good. He rewards us for the good (with presents). He punishes for the bad (with lumps of coal). He is omnipresent as he is able to somehow get to almost everyone's house all over the world in one night. He only comes if you truly believe in him.
The fantasy is perpetuated by everyone in the cultural agreeing to pass on the myth to their child. It's amazing to me how it is expected that when we grow up we will discard the one fairy story but not the other. They are really the same story and the same person only with a different suit and hat.

To what extent is "looking after yourself" considered "self worship"?
when it's vain
Since we will all eventually turn into compost, everything we do is ultimately "vain".

If Reniaa lives in a fantasy world part of the time, I dare say that comes with the territory of being an imperfect person. We watch TV, which portrays fantasy. We dream when we sleep properly. Dreams may contain fantasy elements. The devil and his demons have had conversations with perfect people such as Eve and Jesus. The world the devil and the demons love is fantasy. So, we must be careful with the claims we make, lest we be judged by them ourselves, which is quite fitting when we think about it.
Yes, but a sane person knows the difference between fantasy and reality. They don't believe the TV shows are real. They don't believe the fairy stories are real. There is no more evidence that Satan and God are real then there is that Cinderella and the fairy godmother are.
Not sure who said this but it seems apropriate: The difference between someone who is neurotic and someone who is psychotic is this: The neurotic builds castles in the air. The psychotic moves in.
